Kareena Biography

Kareena is the great-granddaughter of Prithviraj Kapoor, the famous actor. She is

the granddaughter of actor and producer Raj Kapoor and daughter of Randhir

Kapoor and actress Babita. Her great uncles are Shashi Kapoor and Shammi

Kapoor. Her uncles are Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor. Her cousins are Ranbir

Kapoor and Nikhil Nanda who is married to Amitabh Bachchan's daughter, Shweta

Nanda. Her sister Karisma Kapoor is also in the film industry.
She is currently dating actor-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor (they starred together in the

2004 movie Fida which did not succeed at the box office).
The first unconventional step she took was by signing Refugee immediately after

rejecting Rakesh Roshan's Kaho Naa...Pyar Hai. Minor differences led to her

walking out of the project, and wisely so, since the film did nothing for its heroine

Patel. Refugee was a perfect launch for Kareena, who, with her ethereal looks

managed to carve a niche for herself as a performing actress as opposed to a
glamour doll.

Though her debut vehicle, Refugee, received only a lukewarm response in

commercial terms, critics were unanimous in their verdict: Kareena was an actress

to watch. Abhishek Bachchan, who also made his debut in Refugee, was

completely overshadowed. People connected with the film desperately wanted the

film to do well, but the woman in question here remains unruffled. She has nothing to
fear.

What can go wrong for a natural actress like Kareena? She comes from the family

of the great Prithvi Raj Kapoor who founded the first family of Indian cinema. He

never knew that one day his name would be synonymous with talent and beauty and

the family would be respected so much by the industry as well as non-film folk.

Her second release, Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, with the untested Tusshar Kapoor in

the male lead, has got off to a rousing start at the box office, and Kareena has

cornered all the accolades. It's understandable: she's so amazingly good, everything

else in the film just pales in comparison. Kareena, of course, must be already

accustomed to being having critical praise heaped on her.
Yash Chopra's production signed her for a film with Rani Mukherjee and Hrithik

Roshan. Finally, she now has Sooraj Barjatya's next love triangle with both Hrithik

and Abhishek in the lead. To balance some projects that show her in all the

splendor of a Hindi film heroine, she also has Santosh Sivan's Ashoka - A Love
Story, which is a historical.
With Yash Chopra, Karan Johar, Subhash Ghai and now Sooraj Barjatya in her kitty,

Kareena Kapoor has almost reached the top position after just one film. Unlike an

Aishwarya Rai who had all the big makers backing her at one point in her career,

but blew it up, Kareena Kapoor career is being monitored by the mother of all-star
makers, Babita Kapoor.

The immensely talented actress has no regrets about Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

and Devdas. It seems director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had earlier approached

Kareena for these films that she could not accept. She wanted to study law in

Harvard and had no plans to do anything in Bollywood. Boston looked far more

interesting. Kareena was quite unsure even about Paro's role in Devdas, but then

, as everyone says, destiny has peculiar ways.
Kareena would like to be known as an actress right from her first film. She does not

wish to be paid to just stand in front of the camera and look good. This surely is

ambitious thinking for a 23 something actress. However, her genes speak for her.

She is coy and shy, quite unlike the off screen Kareena. As an actress, she claims

to be totally different from sister Karishma. In fact, she is Lady Shah Rukh Khan.

She wants everyone to love and praise her. Like him, she will collect dozens of

awards, though she refuses to be content with the Best Debut Award. "Everyone

gets that, I want something bigger," says she. Hopefully, destiny will support her.

Kareena Attire

"I'm a natural," she claims. "I dislike make-up and jewellery. To me, dressing up does not entail
any kind of discomfort!" And her wardrobe seems to reflect this sentiment. No elaborate make-up stuff, no exquisite jewelry, and no complicated outfits... Easy to wear and easy to disclose... A list of sixteen important items in Kareena Kapoor closet!
"My Blue denims by Guess with small butterflies on them. I must have worn them a thousand times literally!" She loves the fit.
"The three black pants in different cuts and styles that are my security blanket for parties and social occasions. One of them is Armani and the other is Morgan. The third is not branded!" They make her look slim and so are pulled out of the closet each time she `feels' fat!
The only make-up item she uses is kaajal! "I'm very possessive about my Revlon kaajal (kohl) pencil and cannot enter any place without knowing I have it where I can reach it easily!"
For rare occasions like a premiere or a wedding there's a lipstick she's extremely secretive about. "All I'll say that it's a basic pink Mac lipstick... I'm not revealing anymore even if you think I'm cheap!"
"I love my French Connection denim jacket! There are no words to describe its cut, fit and comfort!"
"My basic long black skirt!"
"A part of my closet is reserved for things I don't use anymore like my white trousers (not branded) which I used to wear once upon a time but now I just look at it fondly!"
Her first dress was a present from her sister Karisma. "I'm very sentimental about the Versace outfit Lolo presented to me on my eighteenth birthday. It's a black slinky, sexy halter dress that I wore only once in New York. Need I say that it was a smash hit?"
" I get hysterical even at shootings if I can't find my everyday wear black Gucci sandals in my vicinity. My spot boy keeps an eye more on my shoes than me!"
Her cupboard is full of various belts with fancy buckles. "I love belts and have collected about hundred of them -- branded and otherwise. Gucci, DKNY, Morgan, Muglier etc... Of course I don't wear any of them any longer because my pants are always tight these days, never loose."
"My first watch -- a Bulgari that I wear everyday -- which again was a present from Lolo! But I think it's time for a new one now... Mom, are you listening?" She plans to demand for a Piaget with a blue, crystal dial...
"Of all the presents I'm most sentimental about the spaghetti strap top with tiger print which my Mom bought for me four years ago... I cannot wear it any longer but it is special."
"When I cannot decide on what to wear for a drive I pick up my white Cotton World T-shirt or my black Next top that looks like a cardigan. That's why these form an important part of my wardrobe!"
Whenever Kareena is tired or low at a shooting, she perks herself by dousing herself with perfume. "It makes me fresh. My favourite perfume is Vice-Versa by YSL or then it's Romance!"
"In the good old days my cupboard was full of tight fitting clothes but these days it's all loose and hence the Versace sweat shirts that are loose and yet look cool!"
Last but not the least, her latest favourite -- salwar kameez! "I have recently discovered the comfort of wearing Indian clothes. These days I wear them for trials or evenings out. Especially my Pakistani salwar kameez sets in Lavender, Pink, Yellow, Plum, White and all pastel colours. I buy them from a lady who supplies to Jemima Khan. And don't you dare ask me for her numbers?"

All you always wanted to ask Kareena

What are the three things you liked about your character in Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon?
a. That it helped me to break away from the image of Poo (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) b. I loved the fact that like me, Sanjana is a girl of today but she's also steeped in traditional values. c. Her conviction in her love. The fact that she will love Prem till the end of time.
Have you been in love?
Yes. I have been in love in the past. Right now, there's no one.
When you fall in love again will it be till the end of time?
Yes. When I do, it will be till the end of time. In Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, it lasted only for three hours.
Will you tell us three things you like about Hrithik Roshan?
a. His greatest quality is his goodness towards people. He's so nice and polite with them, you'll never know he's a star. I respect him for that. b. I love his sincerity, his dedication to his work. c. The special aura around him. He has personality. Not many people or even stars have it.
Does Hrithik Roshan make a good lover on screen?
Yes. We've done four films together. And the intensity with which he plays his characters is amazing. He's a wonderful actor. And he can play any character convincingly on screen.
Do you believe in God?
I'm a firm believer. I believe in the complete power of God and am convinced He's constantly watching over us.
Do angels exist?
Yes, they do. Like the one in front of you.
Are you a happy person?
I'm happy from time to time. There are days when I'm very happy and days when I'm sad. Everyone out here is searching for happiness. There's no one who is completely happy. Anyone who says he's completely happy is lying.
What makes you unhappy?
I'm a highly emotional person. Anything and anyone can make me sad. I just need an opportunity to cry. Lolo jokes that if I'm feeling bored, I start crying.
When did you last cry?
On the day Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon released. I was nervous and cried and cried from noon to evening. The opening was phenomenal and so were my tears. I don't know what happened to me. It was only in the evening when mom and Lolo scolded me for being such a fool that I stopped.
What's the naughtiest thing you've ever done?
I'm a naughty girl. I'm up to something every day. But the naughtiest thing I did was in school. I stole the ninth standard exam question papers from the principal's office. I broke open the lock and got the papers. I've known how to pick locks since I was in the ninth standard.
What won't you joke about?
I won't joke about God. And I detest people who do.
Which is the one act you regret?
There's no one act that I regret. But yes, I regret never listening to my mom. Whenever she has cautioned me about people, I've ignored her advice. Only to regret it later.
If you had to make an apology, to whom would it be and what would it be about?
There's no one act that I regret. But yes, I regret never listening to my mom. Whenever she has cautioned me about people, I've ignored her advice. Only to regret it later. I would like to apologise to all those people I have hurt unintentionally. All I can say is that I never meant to hurt them. But I brought sadness into their lives and I apologise for it.
What's the one thing you'd like to change about yourself?
My heart. It's too soft. I'm sick of thinking with my heart. And I'm sick of being hurt all the time. Why do people find only my heart to break? Now I want to cut it out and throw it someplace from where I can't retrieve it.
What do you dream of possessing?
a) I have a terrible habit of looking into the mirror every second. Even when I'm talking to people, I keep looking into the mirror. c) I bite my nails.
What do you dream of possessing?
Utmost sanity. All I want in life is peace, happiness, complete fulfillment. But it never happens that way. You get happiness and peace only in parts. They never last long. People say that when they fall in love they will be happy, when they marry they will be happy; when they have a baby they will be happy. It never happens. Because happiness is so fleeting.
Which is the sexiest word in the English dictionary?
Men.
And who is the sexiest man?
ShahRukh Khan. Believe me, I never go weak-kneed in front of any man. I always believe that men should go weakened in front of me. But when it comes to Shah Rukh Khan, my insides melt like jelly. I'm completely in awe of him. I go ballistic seeing his persona, his attitude, his energy. I had a great time shooting Asoka with him. There's no one like him in the industry. He's the best.
Does love at first sight exist?
No. I believe in taking a second look. All that can exist at first sight is attraction, sizzling chemistry. To fall in love you have to connect with that person at some level. I have to know him, understand him. Otherwise, I can't fall in love.
What is love?
Love is like oxygen--you need it to simply survive. And there are different kinds of love you feel for different people. What you feel for your parents is different from what you feel for your siblings. What you feel for your friends is different for what you feel for your lover. But each kind of love has a special significance in life. The purest form of love is that between a mother and her child.
Would you give in to lust?
Never. I don't believe in lust. Personally, I have to connect with the person on a deep level to give myself to him. I'm dead against one-night stands. I believe in love not lust.
What keeps you going in a crisis?
My belief in myself. My confidence. My strength as a woman and my tears that I shed in abundance.
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
I don't know. I haven't set myself goals like; I want to become a legend. All I know is that I want to be happy. And I want to be with people who make me happy. That's all.
What's the best thing about being an actress?
That you get a chance to connect with people across the country, the globe. I believe actors are a blessed lot. They are messengers of love. They are worshipped like God. They have the power to sway millions.
And what's the worst thing about being an actress?
The recognition. You lose the life of a normal 22-year-old girl. You lose the innocence of youth. Sometimes, I feel I'm 40. There are times when I want to be a normal 22-year-old, without any cares in the world. I don't want 500 people looking at me wherever I go. The only place I can find complete privacy is in my bedroom or my bathroom. No 22-year-old should have to live like that. I wouldn't want this life for my daughter.
If you had to start your career all over again, would you do anything different?
No way. God has given me so much in just three years. I've done 11 films to date and all with the topmost directors. What more can I ask for? I've loved each and every moment of each and every film of mine. I stand by every film of mine. Really, I couldn't have asked for a better start than this.
Can you handle pressure?
I have seen so much in my childhood, seen the hell Lolo went through in her career, seen all that my parents have gone through... pressure means nothing for me. For someone who's constantly under scrutiny, handling pressure becomes second nature. In fact, I wouldn't recognize life without it. Besides, what's life without pressure, without pitfalls? What matters is how you deal with it.
Has anything ever made you go red in the face?
I have red cheeks, so no one can ever guess when I'm embarrassed. I can camouflage it beautifully.
When do you get angry?
I can get angry about really silly things. If my car is parked in the wrong direction, it can start me off, if my cosmetics aren't kept properly, I flare up. But my anger lasts for only three minutes, never more than that. I get hurt easily, though.
What do you do in your spare time?
I lie back on my bed and think of life, of love. I spend time with my friends. I go for movies. Or I simply pull the blanket over, sit with Lolo and talk about the movies or just gossip. It's fun when we sisters get together.
How do others judge you?
Harshly. The media is always writing all sorts of things about me. I'm always misunderstood. I'm a victim of circumstances. But as Lolo tells me, I should worry the day they stop talking about me. For that would mean that I don't matter any more.
Have you ever been propositioned?
No. People know where I come from. They know my reputation of being as hot as fire. No one would dare proposition me; they know they'll get it good if they do.
Would you have a love child?
No. I don't believe in having a baby out of wedlock. To me, having a baby is a very pure gesture. It cannot happen without the culmination of marriage. There's a time and place for everything.
Which is your favourite vacation spot?
Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Switzerland. From the desert to the snowfield. Just shows that I'm an extremist. It's either here or there; no midways for me.
What can you never do without?
My mother. I always say that God has created two arms for me--Lolois my right arm and my mother is my left arm. If I lose even one of them, I'll be finished for life. I'll be handicapped.
Who is your worst or best critic?
Karisma Kapoor, of course. She notices each and every thing I do on screen. Whether it's my make-up, my eyelashes, the way I'm standing or my expressions, she has a take on everything. And if she doesn't like something, she'll let me know loud and clear. Recently, when I was doing the Pepsi ad, she called me up in her sleep to tell me my make-up shouldn't be dark, to find out the colour of lipstick I was going to use, the length of my eyelashes. She really does love me.
Which DVDs do you keep watching?
I love watching old movies like Breakfast At Tiffany's, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Love Story and Ben Hur. Among Hindi movies, I love watching my grandfather's movies. I also love to watch movies of Meena Kumari and Nargis. Whenever I can't sleep, I'm with my DVD player.
Are you hooked onto the net?
No. I hate the C of computers. This despite having done a year course in computers in the US. I'm hooked onto Hindi movie trailers on the television.
What would you like your tombstone to read?
The hottest, sexiest woman lies here. Come join her.
